Do QR codes expire?

Short answer: a QR code itself never "expires" — the pattern is just data. What actually makes a code stop working is almost always one of two things, and both are avoidable.

Static codes: they don't expire

A static QR code has the destination encoded directly into the black-and-white pattern. There is no server involved and nothing to renew. It will keep resolving to the same destination for as long as that destination exists.

The only way a static code "stops working" is if the page it points to is taken down. The code is fine; the target moved.

Dynamic codes: this is where codes die

A dynamic code relies on a redirect. If the company running that redirect switches it off, every code pointing through it goes dead — no matter how many you printed.

The most common reason that happens is a lapsed subscription. Many dynamic-QR services bill monthly or annually, and when the payment stops, so does your redirect. People assume they bought a QR code; they actually rented one.

How to make sure your code never expires

Pick a dynamic code that is a one-off purchase, not a subscription. QReasy dynamic codes are paid once and redirect forever — there is no renewal to miss and no way for the code to be switched off because a card expired.

And if you truly never need to change the destination, a free static code is the most permanent option of all.

Editable QR codes. Pay once, works forever.

One payment from $3.99 — no subscription, no expiry. Change where your code points anytime, forever. Free static codes included.

Questions, answered

Do QR codes have an expiry date?

No. The QR pattern is just encoded data and has no built-in expiry. A code only stops working if its destination is removed or, for dynamic codes, if the redirect service is switched off.

Why did my QR code stop working?

Usually because it was a dynamic code on a subscription that lapsed, or because the page it pointed to was taken down. A one-off dynamic code from QReasy avoids the first problem entirely.

How do I make a QR code that never expires?

Use a free static code (destination baked in permanently), or a one-off dynamic code that has no subscription to lapse. QReasy dynamic codes redirect forever after a single payment.
