Dynamic QR codes explained

A dynamic QR code is one you can edit after it is printed. The printed pattern never changes, but the destination it sends people to can be updated any time. Here is how that works and what to watch for.

How a dynamic QR code works

Instead of encoding your final destination directly, a dynamic code encodes a short redirect link that you control. When someone scans it, they hit that short link and are instantly forwarded to wherever you have currently pointed it.

Because the printed code only ever contains the short link, you can change the final destination as often as you like — new menu, new offer, new website — without reprinting a single thing.

Why dynamic codes are usually sold as subscriptions (and why they don't need to be)

Most providers put dynamic codes behind a monthly or annual subscription. The uncomfortable part is what happens when you stop paying: the redirect is switched off, and every code you already printed stops working.

Serving a redirect costs a fraction of a cent. That is why we charge once — $3.99 for a single dynamic code — and let it redirect forever. There is no renewal to forget and no way for your printed code to die because a card expired.

What you can do with a dynamic code

A dynamic code is worth it any time the destination might change, or when you want to know how often it is scanned.

  • Update a restaurant menu without reprinting table tents
  • Point a poster to a different landing page each campaign
  • Fix a typo in a URL after the flyers are already out
  • See scan counts so you know a channel is actually working
  • Repoint packaging to a new site after a rebrand

Editable QR codes. Pay once, works forever.

One payment from $3.99 — no subscription, no expiry. Change where your code points anytime, forever. Free static codes included.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?

A static code has the destination baked into the pattern permanently — it cannot be changed once printed. A dynamic code points to a short redirect link you control, so you can change the destination any time without reprinting.

Do I have to pay monthly for a dynamic QR code?

Not with QReasy. Most providers charge a monthly or annual subscription and disable your code if you cancel. Ours is a one-off payment from $3.99 and redirects forever.

Can I change a dynamic QR code after printing?

Yes — that is the whole point. Sign in to your dashboard and change the destination URL; the same printed code immediately starts sending people to the new link.
